The University of Reading are committing to substantial environmental improvements….
The University is committed to reducing its environmental impacts, underlined by its pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 35% by 2015/16 and 45% by 2019/20, compared with a 2008/09 baseline. Plans are also well underway to cut water consumption by 10% by 2014.
Fluorescent lighting projects pay dividends as part of the ongoing upgrades including LED’s.
Older fluorescent lighting systems are being replaced with modern energy efficient equivalents, which not only save energy but also benefit from longer lifetimes. In 2013, major improvements were completed in the URS and Miller buildings, which are collectively savings over £65,000 and 312 tCO2 annually, as well as significantly improving the lighting levels.
The value of insulation.
Good quality insulation is vital for reducing the exchange of heat between the interior of a building and the external environment. Ensuring buildings are well insulated reduces the energy required to heat or to cool, saving money and reducing carbon emissions. It also makes regulation of the internal temperature easier, improving comfort levels for building users, including by helping to address particularly hot or cold spots in buildings.
Many business’ simply have toilets and wash hand basins....
Planned programmes will also see the installation of various water management devices to reduce ongoing water use. The University has set an interim water reduction target of 10% for the year 2012/13

Could you reduce emissions on staff commuting and travel?
The University's Travel Plan was updated in 2012 and outlines our policies for promoting more sustainable modes of travel. Much of this is based from the feedback given to us by staff and students in our yearly travel surveys.
